Traditional Uses

Heterotheca inuloides is one of the most widely used medicinal plants of Mexican folk medicine, where it serves as the principal substitute for European arnica (Arnica montana). Flower-head and whole-plant decoctions and tinctures are applied externally to bruises, sprains, contusions, muscle pain, and slow-healing wounds, and sometimes taken internally for inflammatory complaints. The species is included in the Mexican Pharmacopoeia, and pharmacological investigation has confirmed anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity attributable to cadinane sesquiterpenes (Argueta, 1994; Delgado, 2001; Rocha, 2002).

Botanical Description

Heterotheca inuloides, known as árnica mexicana or false arnica, is a perennial herb of the Asteraceae native to the highlands of central and southern Mexico, growing 30-80 cm tall on open slopes, roadsides, and disturbed ground from 1500 to 2800 m elevation. The erect, branched stems are softly hairy and arise from a stout woody base. Leaves are alternate, sessile or short-petiolate, lanceolate to oblong, 3-10 cm long, with entire to shallowly toothed margins and a rough, glandular-pubescent texture that releases a characteristic aromatic, slightly resinous scent when crushed. Numerous flower heads are produced in loose corymbs at the stem tips; each head is 2-3 cm across with bright golden-yellow ray florets surrounding a darker yellow disc, reminiscent of European arnica. The involucral bracts are arranged in several overlapping series and are glandular. The achenes are pubescent and topped by a tawny pappus of capillary bristles.
