Botanical Description
Gynostemma pentaphyllum, known as jiaogulan or southern ginseng, is a herbaceous climbing vine of the Cucurbitaceae with slender, grooved stems that scramble and climb by means of axillary tendrils. The leaves are alternate and pedately compound, typically bearing five (sometimes three to seven) ovate-lanceolate, serrate leaflets, the central leaflet largest, with a faintly sweet then bitter taste. The plant is usually dioecious, producing small, greenish-white, star-shaped flowers in slender axillary panicles, the petals narrow and pointed. The fruit is a small, smooth, blackish-green spherical berry a few millimetres across containing one to three seeds. Native to warm-temperate and subtropical Asia, including southern China, Japan, Korea, and parts of Southeast Asia, it grows in moist forests, thickets, and along streams at low to moderate elevations, and is widely cultivated for herbal tea.
