Traditional Uses

In Thai and Indochinese folk medicine the leaves and roots of Glycosmis trifoliata are used as a bitter tonic and applied topically as a wash or poultice for skin eruptions, itching and minor wounds; the plant is also taken in decoction for fevers and indigestion (Quattrocchi, 2012; Wiart, 2006).

Botanical Description

Glycosmis trifoliata is a small evergreen shrub or treelet in the family Rutaceae growing 1 to 4 metres tall, with slender, sparsely branched, glabrous stems and a slightly aromatic, pungent foliage typical of the family. The alternate leaves are unifoliolate or trifoliolate (giving the specific epithet); the leaflets are elliptic to oblong-lanceolate, 6 to 16 centimetres long and 2 to 5 centimetres wide, dark green and glossy above, paler beneath, with entire to faintly crenate margins and minute pellucid oil dots visible against the light. Small white to pale greenish-yellow, sweetly scented flowers about 4 to 6 millimetres across, with four to five free petals and prominent stamens, are produced in short axillary or terminal panicles. The fruit is a small, fleshy, pinkish to translucent-white globose berry 6 to 10 millimetres in diameter, with one or two seeds, edible but rather insipid. The species occurs in lowland evergreen and semi-evergreen forest, forest margins and disturbed ground from north-eastern India and southern China through Indochina to the Malay Peninsula.
