Western Herbalism Properties
Traditional Uses
In Taiwan and parts of coastal southern China Glossocardia bidens (as Glossogyne tenuifolia, "hsiang-ju" / Taiwanese herbal tea plant) is a well-known folk herb: the whole plant is decocted and drunk as a cooling herbal tea to "clear heat" and for fevers, sore throat, summer-heat complaints and inflammation, and pharmacological studies report antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of the extracts (Wu et al., 2005; Hsu, Taiwanese ethnobotany records).
Botanical Description
Glossocardia bidens (also treated as Glossogyne tenuifolia) is a small perennial herb of the daisy family (Asteraceae), distributed through southern and eastern Asia, Australia and the Pacific, including India, southern China, Taiwan and the coastal areas of Southeast Asia, where it grows on open sandy ground, grassland, rocky coasts and disturbed sites. It forms a basal rosette and slender, wiry, branching stems usually 10 to 40 centimetres tall, with finely divided, pinnately dissected leaves whose narrow linear segments give the plant a delicate, thread-like appearance. The flower heads are small and borne singly on long slender stalks; each head has a few short yellow ray florets surrounding a centre of yellow disc florets. The fruit is a slender, flattened achene tipped with a pair of barbed bristles (hence "bidens") that aid in dispersal by clinging. The plant is somewhat bitter and aromatic.
