Botanical Description

Fumaria sepium is a delicate annual herb of the fumitory family (Papaveraceae, subfamily Fumarioideae), part of the variable Fumaria officinalis complex and native to the western Mediterranean and parts of southern Europe and North Africa, where it grows on hedge-banks, cultivated fields and disturbed ground. It is a slender, sprawling or weakly climbing plant with greyish-green, much-divided, fern-like leaves cut into narrow segments. The small tubular flowers are borne in loose racemes and are pinkish to purple with darker crimson tips, each spurred at the base in the characteristic fumitory shape. The flowers give way to small, rounded, one-seeded nutlets. Like other fumitories it has a soft, somewhat smoky appearance and a brief annual life cycle, completing growth in the cooler months.

Native Region: Morocco, Portugal, Spain
