Botanical Description

Feretia apodanthera is a shrub or small tree of the coffee family (Rubiaceae), widespread in the savanna and dry woodland regions of tropical Africa, particularly across the Sahel and West African belt. It typically grows 2 to 6 metres tall, with slender, often crooked or twisting branches. The leaves are opposite, elliptic to obovate, with an entire margin and a rounded to wedge-shaped base, sometimes ending in a short point. Small, fragrant, white to cream tubular flowers are borne in clusters and give way to small, rounded, fleshy fruits a few millimetres in diameter that ripen reddish to dark. The species is adapted to seasonally dry climates, frequently occurring on rocky or lateritic soils and along watercourses in savanna. It is a familiar component of the dry-zone flora and is widely valued in the regions where it grows for both medicinal and socio-economic uses.
