Botanical Description
Eugenia sulcata is a Brazilian evergreen shrub or small tree of the myrtle family, bearing opposite, simple, leathery leaves dotted with aromatic translucent oil glands and grooved or sulcate young stems that give the species its name. The small white flowers have four petals and a conspicuous brush of numerous stamens, and develop into globose fleshy berries crowned by the persistent calyx, ripening to red or dark purple. The species is native to eastern and southeastern Brazil, from Rio de Janeiro to Santa Catarina, where it occurs in Atlantic Forest, restinga and seasonally dry tropical vegetation. Its leaves yield an essential oil that has been the focus of pharmacological study.
