Traditional Uses
In Colombian traditional medicine the frailejon is valued for respiratory complaints: the aromatic resin and leaves are prepared into infusions, poultices and topical remedies used to treat bronchitis, coughs, colds and rheumatic and inflammatory pains (Colombian Andean ethnobotanical records).

Botanical Description
Espeletia grandiflora, a frailejon, is a striking caulirosulate perennial of the family Asteraceae endemic to the high Andean paramo of Colombia, where it is one of the most conspicuous plants of these cold, wet, treeless uplands. It develops a thick, unbranched, columnar trunk clothed in the persistent dead leaves (marcescent foliage) of previous seasons, topped by a dense rosette of large, succulent, lance-shaped leaves densely covered in silvery-white woolly hairs that insulate the plant against intense radiation and nightly frost. From the centre of the rosette rises a tall flowering stalk bearing large, showy, golden-yellow daisy-like flower heads with both ray and disc florets. The whole plant is resinous and aromatic. Slow-growing and long-lived, frailejones play a vital role in paramo hydrology, capturing moisture and feeding the headwaters that supply much of Colombia's water.
