Botanical Description
Erigeron floribundus (synonym Conyza floribunda), commonly known as manyflower fleabane or bilbao fleabane, is an erect annual or biennial herb of the family Asteraceae, native to South America (probably southern Brazil and adjacent Argentina) and naturalised as a widespread weed of disturbed ground, road verges, fallow fields and waste places throughout warm temperate and subtropical regions of the world. The plant typically grows 50–150 cm tall, with a stout, ribbed, often reddish stem branched mainly in the upper part and clothed with short, spreading hairs. The leaves are alternate, lanceolate to oblanceolate, 4–12 cm long and 0.5–2 cm wide, with sessile, somewhat clasping bases, entire to sparsely toothed margins, and short stiff hairs on both surfaces. The inflorescence is a large, much-branched, pyramidal to elongated panicle of many small heads; each head is 4–6 mm high and contains numerous very short, white to pale lilac female ray florets that scarcely exceed the involucre, surrounding a small disc of yellowish tubular florets. The involucre is narrowly campanulate with glabrous to sparsely hairy bracts. The fruit is a small achene with a single row of whitish pappus bristles.
