Traditional Uses

In West African traditional medicine, decoctions of the stem bark, root and leaves of Dalbergia saxatilis are used for cough, bronchial complaints, skin lesions and toothache, and the root decoction is taken for toothache and abdominal pain (Burkill, 1995). Pharmacological studies in animal models support analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic actions of the plant (Kolawole et al., 2017).

Botanical Description

Dalbergia saxatilis is a scrambling shrub or woody climber of the pea family (Fabaceae) reaching several metres, often clambering over rocks and other vegetation in West African savanna and forest margins. The branches bear alternate, pinnately compound leaves with several alternate, oblong to elliptic leaflets that are rounded at the tip. Small, fragrant, whitish to cream pea-like flowers are produced in branched panicles. The fruit is a thin, flat, papery pod that is indehiscent and contains one or a few seeds, typical of the rosewood genus. The species ranges from Senegal and Guinea eastward across the Sudanian and Guinean zones of tropical West Africa, growing in wooded grassland, gallery forest and rocky outcrops.
