Cymbonotus lawsonianus

Cymbonotus lawsonianus, often called Austral bear's-ear or simply native dandelion, is a small stemless perennial herb of the Asteraceae family, native to southeastern Australia and Tasmania. The plant forms a low rosette 5 to 20 centimetres across, growing from a slender taproot. Leaves are all basal, oblanceolate to elliptic, 3 to 10 centimetres long, with sinuate to pinnately lobed margins, dark green and glabrous to sparsely cobwebby above and densely white-woolly beneath, giving the underside a strikingly pale appearance. Solitary daisy-like capitula are borne on very short scapes that scarcely exceed the leaves; each head is 1.5 to 2.5 centimetres across, with bright yellow ligulate ray florets surrounding a central disc of yellow tubular florets, superficially resembling a small dandelion. Involucral bracts are arranged in several overlapping rows. Fruits are small ribbed cypselae with a pappus of fine bristles, dispersed by wind. The species grows in open grasslands and woodland understoreys.
