Botanical Description
Crataegus intricata, Lange's thorn or Copenhagen hawthorn, is a shrub or small tree of the Rosaceae native to eastern North America, typically 2-5 m tall, with crooked, intricately branched stems armed with stout thorns. The alternate leaves are ovate to elliptic, sharply and often doubly toothed and shallowly lobed, tapering to a wedge-shaped base, and turn yellow to bronze in autumn. The white flowers, about 1.5-2 cm across, are borne in small few-flowered clusters in spring, each with five petals, numerous stamens with pale to pinkish anthers, and several styles. The fruit is a small reddish to greenish-brown pome (haw) about 1 cm wide, containing several hard nutlets and ripening in autumn. A taxonomically complex group, it grows in dry open woods, woodland edges, thickets, clearings and rocky slopes.
