Western Herbalism Properties

Actions:
anti-inflammatoryanalgesic

Traditional Uses

In Brazilian folk medicine, Conocliniopsis prasiifolia, known as "mentrasto-roxo," is popularly used as an anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic remedy (Carvalho et al., 2006). Pharmacological investigation has substantiated these uses: the hydroalcoholic and ethanol extracts of the leaves demonstrated analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity in animal models with low toxicity (Carvalho et al., 2006; Revista Brasileira de Farmacognosia, 2008). These documented anti-inflammatory and analgesic actions, supported by both tradition and pharmacology, are the basis for the assigned Western properties, and the Brazilian folk tradition is recorded as "other."

Botanical Description

Conocliniopsis prasiifolia (syn. Eupatorium prasiifolium), known in Brazil as "mentrasto-roxo," is a shrubby perennial in the aster family (Asteraceae) native to northeastern and eastern Brazil, particularly the caatinga and other semi-arid and seasonally dry regions. It grows as a branching subshrub or herb up to about 1–2 m tall, with erect stems. The leaves are opposite, ovate to lanceolate, with toothed margins and a somewhat rough or aromatic texture. The small flower heads are composed entirely of tubular disc florets, lilac to purplish in color, grouped into flat-topped or rounded terminal clusters that attract pollinating insects. The fruits are small ribbed achenes crowned by a pappus of fine bristles for wind dispersal. The species contains sesquiterpene lactones (heliangolides and bejaranolides) and flavonoids. It is a plant of open scrub, dry thickets, and disturbed ground in warm, seasonally dry Brazilian landscapes.
