Botanical Description

Chaenomeles speciosa, the flowering quince or Chinese quince, is a thorny, deciduous shrub of the rose family (Rosaceae) native to eastern China and naturalised elsewhere. It typically grows 1 to 3 metres tall, forming a dense, wide-spreading tangle of interlacing spiny branches. The young twigs are purplish-brown and smooth, darkening with age. The leaves are alternate, simple, ovate to oblong, 3 to 9 cm long, with sharply serrate margins and glossy dark green upper surfaces. Showy flowers appear in early spring, clustered two to six on second-year wood with very short stalks so that they appear pressed against the branches; they are typically scarlet to red but may be pink, white or salmon. The fruit is a fragrant, hard, greenish-yellow pome resembling a small quince, ripening in autumn. Widely cultivated as an ornamental for its early bloom, the species also yields the nearly mature fruit harvested for traditional medicine.
