Abnaki: The plant was used as an analgesic (Rousseau, 1947).

 

Woodlands Cree: Used as a pediatric aid and as a sedative; the seed was also used as a food spice and staple food (Leighton, 1985).

 

Iroquois: Employed as a veterinary aid (Rousseau, 1945).

Botanical Description

Carum carvi (caraway) is a biennial herbaceous member of the carrot family (Apiaceae), growing from a slender tap-root and producing a basal rosette of finely divided, feathery pinnate leaves with thread-like ultimate segments. In its second year the plant sends up a hollow, ridged flowering stem reaching 30–60 cm tall, bearing further reduced leaves and terminating in compound umbels of small white to faintly pink flowers in early to mid-summer. The fruit, commonly though incorrectly called the "seed," is a smooth, crescent-shaped, laterally compressed schizocarp about 3 mm long with five pale longitudinal ridges, emitting a distinctive warm anise-like aroma when crushed. Native to western Asia, Europe, and North Africa, caraway is naturalised in cool temperate regions worldwide and favours warm, sunny situations on well-drained loamy soils rich in organic matter, occurring in meadows, pastures, and roadsides as well as widely cultivated as a spice crop.

The dominant, characteristic aroma compound of caraway. Provides carminative, antispasmodic and antimicrobial actions and underlies the traditional use for bloating, colic and dyspepsia.

Monoterpene hydrocarbon

Concentration: ~30-45% of the essential oil (carvone + limonene together ~95%)

Co-major volatile that contributes to the antispasmodic, carminative and antimicrobial profile of caraway oil.

Essential (volatile) oil

Terpenoid volatile oil

Concentration: ~3-7% of the dried fruit ('seed')

The whole oil relaxes gastrointestinal smooth muscle and reduces gas and cramping, the basis of caraway's carminative reputation and its use in combination digestive preparations.

Minor monoterpenes (myrcene, β-caryophyllene, trans-dihydrocarvone, carveol)

Mono- and sesquiterpenes

Concentration: Individually <5% of the oil

Contribute to the overall aroma and to antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of the oil.

Non-volatile lipid fraction of the seed; a source of unusual C18 fatty acids and dietary energy but not the main medicinal component.

Water-soluble antioxidants present in the fruit and in aqueous extracts, contributing to reported antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.

⚠ Drug Interactions

Antidiabetic medicines (insulin, sulfonylureas, metformin)

Caraway extracts have shown modest hypoglycaemic activity in animal studies, which could in principle add to glucose-lowering drugs when large medicinal doses are used.

Clinical note: Culinary amounts are not a concern; monitor glucose only with high-dose or prolonged therapeutic use.

Antihypertensive and diuretic drugs

Minor Evidence: Theoretical

Caraway has traditional diuretic use and mild blood-pressure-lowering activity in animal models, giving a theoretical additive effect at medicinal doses.

Clinical note: No clinically significant interaction reported at dietary intake; caution only with concentrated preparations.

Preparation Methods

Infusion / crushed-seed tea

Parts: ripe dried fruit ('seed')

Lightly crush about 1-2 g (roughly 1 teaspoon) of caraway fruit, pour over 150 mL boiling water, cover and steep 10-15 minutes; strain and drink between meals up to three times daily for bloating, flatulence and mild cramping.

Essential oil (internal, in combination products)

Parts: fruit essential oil

Standardised caraway oil is used in low doses (a few drops, typically enteric-coated and often combined with peppermint oil) for functional dyspepsia. Concentrated essential oil should be diluted, kept away from children, and not used undiluted or in pregnancy without professional advice.

Warm oil poultice (topical)

Parts: fruit essential oil

Caraway oil diluted in a carrier oil is applied as a warm abdominal compress to ease IBS-type cramping and bloating, as evaluated in controlled trials. Discontinue if skin irritation occurs.

In patients with irritable bowel syndrome, warm caraway oil poultices applied to the abdomen for three weeks reduced symptom severity compared with a non-heated olive oil control, indicating a benefit of topical caraway oil, though the effect was not superior to a heated olive oil control.
