Traditional Uses

Across its Southeast Asian and Pacific range, local populations use the leaves, roots, and young branches in traditional medicine as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and haemostatic; the leaves are rolled into cigarettes considered to have a sedative effect in asthma, and crushed flower and leaf buds are applied as a styptic on wounds (Monaco Nature Encyclopedia; Useful Tropical Plants).

Botanical Description

Callicarpa pedunculata is a shrub of the Lamiaceae (formerly Verbenaceae) growing 1–4 m tall, with stems and young branches densely clothed in stellate (star-shaped) hairs. The leaves are opposite, ovate to elliptic, pointed, with toothed margins and a softly hairy, often grey-tomentose underside. Numerous small flowers are borne in compact, stalked axillary cymes, the corolla pink to purplish and the four stamens conspicuously exserted. The fruit is a small, rounded, fleshy drupe that ripens to a striking violet or purple, clustered in showy bunches characteristic of the beautyberry genus. The species ranges across South and Southeast Asia to Australia, including Assam, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Guinea, East Timor, and eastern Australia, where it grows at forest margins and in open grassland and is gathered from the wild by local people.

Native Region: Assam, Bismarck Archipelago, China Southeast, East Himalaya, Hainan, Laos, Lesser Sunda Is., Maluku, Myanmar, Nansei-shoto, New Guinea, New South Wales, Philippines, Queensland, Solomon Is., Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam
