Botanical Description
Bromus benekenii is a loosely tufted perennial grass of the Poaceae family growing 60-120 cm tall with slender, erect culms that are minutely pubescent at the nodes. Leaf blades are flat, lax, soft, 4-10 mm wide, and sparsely hairy; the leaf sheaths are densely covered with downward-pointing hairs, and the ligule is membranous and short. The inflorescence is a slender, nodding to drooping panicle 10-25 cm long, the branches usually paired with one much shorter than the other and bearing 1-3 lanceolate spikelets. Spikelets are 15-25 mm long, slender, with 4-8 florets; the lemmas are 9-12 mm long, narrowly lanceolate, finely pubescent, and bear a straight awn from below the apex about as long as the lemma itself. Native to deciduous woodlands and shaded slopes across Europe and temperate Asia, the species flowers from June to July.
