Botanical Description
Biscutella coronopifolia is a small annual or short-lived perennial herb in the Brassicaceae native to the western Mediterranean region, particularly the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa, where it grows on dry, open, often disturbed sandy or stony ground. Plants are slender and finely pubescent, 10 to 35 centimetres tall, with a tap-rooted base and one to several ascending stems. The leaves form a basal rosette of pinnately lobed to deeply pinnatifid, somewhat fleshy blades resembling those of Coronopus (whence the epithet), grading into smaller, narrowly lobed cauline leaves. The terminal raceme bears numerous small four-petaled yellow flowers, each with six tetradynamous stamens. The fruit is the characteristic biscutate (spectacle-shaped) silicle of the genus, composed of two flattened, orbicular lobes joined at the persistent style, splitting at maturity into two indehiscent, winged, single-seeded units that are dispersed by wind and water.
