Western Herbalism Properties
Traditional Uses
In the folk medicine of Yunnan, China the roots, stems and leaves of Bauhinia brachycarpa (called "Gui-Ding-Ba" by the Bai and "Pi-Mi-Li" by the Yi peoples) are prepared as a water decoction and used for neurosis and peripheral inflammatory pain such as myalgia and bone pain; pharmacological study of the ethanolic extract confirmed an antinociceptive effect in a neuropathic-pain model, supporting its analgesic and anti-inflammatory use (Chen et al., 2022).
Botanical Description
Bauhinia brachycarpa is a deciduous shrub or small tree of the legume family (Fabaceae, subfamily Cercidoideae), the bauhinia or orchid-tree group. It bears the genus's distinctive two-lobed, butterfly-shaped leaves, divided to about a third or less of their length, and clusters of small white flowers with several fertile stamens, followed by short, flattened, oblong pods (the epithet brachycarpa meaning short-fruited) that dehisce to release the seeds. It is native to the Himalayan region and southwestern China, especially Yunnan and neighbouring provinces, extending into Myanmar, where it grows in scrub, thickets and open mountain slopes. In China it is a familiar component of the dry warm-temperate hill vegetation.
