Traditional Chinese Uses

Ba Qia is the rhizome of Smilax china (Rhizoma Smilacis Chinensis, also called Jin Gang Teng), a prickly greenbrier vine, used among the wind-damp-dispelling medicinals. Sweet and sour with a neutral nature, entering the Liver and Kidney channels, it dispels Wind-Dampness, frees the channels, promotes urination, resolves toxicity and reduces swelling. It is a classic remedy for wind-damp painful obstruction (bi) with joint aches and stiffness, and for Damp-Heat and toxin conditions — chronic pelvic inflammation and abnormal vaginal discharge, urinary difficulty, gout and rheumatism, dysentery, and Heat-toxin sores, carbuncles and swellings.

It is decocted or soaked in wine, made into pills or powder, and often paired with other Damp-clearing and detoxifying herbs. It has also featured in traditional formulas for scrofula and, historically, for syphilitic sores.

Botanical Description

Smilax china is a perennial, deciduous climbing vine of the Smilacaceae, native to East and Southeast Asia. It produces tough, prickly stems that scramble several metres over shrubs and trees, supported by paired tendrils arising from the petiole base. The leaves are alternate, broadly ovate to nearly orbicular, leathery, with three to five prominent arcuate veins. Small yellow-green flowers appear in axillary umbels in spring, followed by glossy red berries about 6–8 mm across. The medicinal organ is the large, woody, knotty rhizome (often called 'China-root'), reddish-brown externally and pale within. The plant favors thickets, hillsides, and forest margins. It is one of the Asian congeners of the Western 'sarsaparilla' group.

A principal bioactive with anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective and anti-hyperuricemic activity, consistent with the traditional use of the rhizome for gout, dampness and rheumatic swelling.

Engeletin (and isoengeletin)

Dihydroflavonol glycoside

Concentration: Characteristic flavonoid

Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant flavonoid glycoside co-occurring with astilbin; inhibits inflammatory signalling in experimental models.

Resveratrol and oxyresveratrol

Stilbenes

Concentration: Minor bioactive stilbenes

Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory stilbenes contributing to the radical-scavenging and anti-proliferative activity of rhizome extracts.

Piceid (polydatin) and scirpusin A

Stilbene glycoside / stilbene dimer

Concentration: Minor

Stilbene derivatives with antioxidant activity; scirpusin A is a resveratrol dimer among the more potent radical scavengers of the rhizome.

Steroidal saponins (dioscin and related smilax saponins)

Steroidal saponins

Concentration: Characteristic of the genus Smilax

Contribute anti-inflammatory, antitumour and antimicrobial activity and part of the detoxifying, dampness-resolving reputation of the herb.

Flavonols (quercetin, kaempferol, dihydrokaempferol glycosides)

Antioxidant flavonoids adding to the overall free-radical-scavenging capacity of the extract.

Chlorogenic acid

Preparation Methods

Raw rhizome decoction

Parts: rhizome

The dried, sliced rhizome (typical dose ~10-30 g, up to larger amounts in traditional practice) is decocted in water for gout, rheumatic pain, damp-heat sores and pelvic inflammation. Longer simmering is used to extract the flavonoid and saponin fraction.

Medicinal-wine / external wash

Parts: rhizome

Traditionally steeped in rice wine for wind-damp joint pain, or the strong decoction is used externally as a wash and poultice for carbuncles, sores and skin swellings.
