Traditional Uses
In Saharan and Moroccan traditional medicine Asteriscus graveolens (Berber ‘tafs’) is widely used: the aromatic herb is taken for fever, bronchitis and digestive complaints, as a stomachic, and is applied for inflammation, headache and bowel disorders; the plant’s essential oil and extracts show documented antimicrobial (notably antifungal) and anti-inflammatory activity (Bellakhdar, 1997).

Botanical Description
Asteriscus graveolens is a small, aromatic, much-branched perennial herb or subshrub of the daisy family (Asteraceae), characteristic of arid North African and Saharan environments. It forms low, somewhat woody, greyish tufts with small, narrow, slightly fleshy and strongly scented leaves clothed in fine hairs that reduce water loss. The solitary yellow flower heads have an outer ring of short ray florets around a yellow disk, subtended by leafy bracts, and mature into cypselae adapted to dry-country dispersal. The plant grows on stony desert pavement (hamada), dry wadis and rocky slopes, mainly in the Sahara and pre-Saharan zones of Morocco, Algeria and neighbouring regions, where its drought tolerance and pungent aroma make it a conspicuous element of the desert flora.
