Western Herbalism Properties
Traditional Uses
In traditional Chinese medicine the root and rhizome of Aster tataricus are known as zi wan (紫菀), a principal herb for transforming phlegm and stopping cough. It is used to moisten the lungs, relieve coughing and wheezing, and expel phlegm in both acute and chronic respiratory complaints (Bensky et al., 2004). The expectorant/antitussive action is well documented for this herb.
