Botanical Description

Artemisia glacialis L. (Asteraceae), the glacier wormwood or génépi des glaciers, is a small aromatic perennial herb of the high European Alps, occurring on siliceous rocks, scree and stable moraines between roughly 2,400 and 3,500 m elevation in France, Switzerland, Italy and Austria. The plant forms low silvery cushions 5-15 cm tall arising from a woody rootstock. The crowded leaves are deeply palmate-digitate, divided into three to five narrow linear lobes, and are densely covered with appressed silvery-silky hairs giving the foliage a luminous grey-white appearance. Small ovoid yellow flower heads about 5-7 mm across are crowded into a short terminal raceme; each head contains numerous tubular florets surrounded by silky-villous phyllaries. The whole plant is strongly aromatic, releasing a bittersweet camphoraceous odour. It is rigorously protected throughout its range as a vulnerable alpine endemic.

Monoterpene ketone (essential oil)

Concentration: Dominant fraction of the essential oil in génépi-group Artemisia; oil yield is very low (~0.1% dry weight)

The bitter, aromatic thujones are the signature volatiles of the génépi Artemisia species and underlie the traditional use of the plant as a digestive bitter and tonic. Thujone is a GABA-A receptor antagonist and is neurotoxic and convulsant at high doses, which is why culinary and medicinal use is limited to dilute infusions and liqueurs.

Camphor and 1,8-cineole

Oxygenated monoterpenes (essential oil)

Concentration: Minor to moderate essential-oil components; proportions vary by chemotype and altitude

These monoterpenes contribute to the camphoraceous, balsamic aroma and to mild antiseptic and expectorant properties associated with génépi preparations used traditionally for coughs and airway complaints.

Methylated flavone aglycones (e.g. eupatilin / artemisetin-type)

Flavonoids

Concentration: Documented as characteristic polymethoxylated flavones of the genus; concentration not well quantified for this species

Lipophilic methylated flavones are widespread in Artemisia and contribute antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity to the aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts of génépi.

Caffeoylquinic acids (chlorogenic acid and analogues)

Concentration: Documented constituent of Artemisia infusions; varies with plant part and season

Caffeoylquinic acids are the main water-soluble antioxidants in Artemisia infusions and are thought to support the reputed anti-fatigue and general tonic effects of génépi teas.

Sesquiterpene lactones

Terpenoids

Concentration: Present in trace to minor amounts typical of the genus

Bitter sesquiterpene lactones stimulate salivary and gastric secretion, reinforcing the plant's traditional role as a bitter digestive and appetite stimulant. They are also responsible for occasional contact allergy typical of Asteraceae.

⚠ Drug Interactions

Central nervous system depressants and alcohol

Moderate Evidence: Theoretical

Thujone is a GABA-A receptor antagonist. Concentrated preparations could in theory counteract GABAergic sedatives or, at toxic doses, lower the seizure threshold; ethanol-based génépi liqueurs also add an alcohol load.

Clinical note: Avoid concentrated extracts or excessive liqueur intake in people on sedatives, antiepileptics, or with a seizure history.

Antiepileptic drugs

Moderate Evidence: Theoretical

High thujone exposure is pro-convulsant and could antagonize the protective effect of anticonvulsant medication.

Clinical note: People with epilepsy should avoid high-dose or repeated use of thujone-rich génépi preparations.

Preparation Methods

Traditional infusion (tea)

Parts: flowering tops, leaves

A pinch of dried flowering tops is steeped in a cup of hot water for a few minutes and taken as a bitter digestive after meals or for fatigue and dyspepsia. Because of the thujone content the infusion is kept dilute and is not recommended for prolonged daily use, in pregnancy or lactation, or in people with epilepsy.

Génépi liqueur / maceration

Parts: whole flowering plant

Whole flowering plants are macerated in sweetened alcohol for several weeks to produce the classic Alpine génépi liqueur, drunk in small quantities as a digestif. The alcohol and thujone content mean it should be consumed only in small amounts and avoided by those advised against alcohol.

Génépi plants, including the glacier génépi, have long been gathered above 2,400 m and used in the western Alps as infusions and liqueurs for fatigue, indigestion, chills and respiratory ailments.
