Botanical Description

Arisaema heterophyllum is a perennial herb in the Araceae native to East Asia, including China, Japan and Korea. It grows from a flattened, rounded corm (tuber) and produces a single large compound leaf divided into numerous leaflets arranged in a curved row, giving it a distinctive radiating appearance. The inflorescence is a typical aroid spadix enclosed in a green to purplish, hooded spathe, with the slender spadix appendage projecting well beyond the spathe. Flowering occurs in late spring to summer, followed by a dense cylindrical cluster of bright red berries. It grows in moist woodland, thickets and shady valley slopes. Like other aroids, the raw plant is acrid and toxic due to calcium oxalate raphides and must be processed before use.
