Botanical Description
Aria collina is a small deciduous tree of the Rosaceae, segregated from the broadly circumscribed Sorbus aria (whitebeam) aggregate to which it formerly belonged. It typically reaches 4-10 m, with a rounded crown and grey, finely fissured bark. The simple, alternate leaves are ovate to obovate, 6-10 cm long, with sharply doubly-serrate margins, dark green and glabrous above and densely white-tomentose beneath, producing the characteristic shimmering appearance of whitebeams in the wind. Flat-topped corymbs of small, five-petalled white flowers open in late spring and develop into small, scarlet to orange-red pomes about 1 cm across. It grows on dry, calcareous slopes and rocky woodland in parts of central and southern Europe.
