Anchomanes difformis

Western Herbalism Properties

Actions:
anti-inflammatory

Traditional Uses

Anchomanes difformis is a widely used plant in West African traditional medicine, especially in Nigeria, where decoctions and preparations of the rhizome and tuber are taken for a range of ailments including oedema, jaundice, gastrointestinal disorders, and inflammatory and febrile conditions (Adebayo & Krettli; Nigerian ethnopharmacology literature). Modern pharmacological studies report anti-inflammatory and related activities of rhizome extracts. The raw tissue is acrid and irritant from calcium oxalate and must be processed before use.

Botanical Description

Anchomanes difformis is a large, robust perennial herb in the arum family (Araceae) widespread across tropical Africa, from West Africa through Central Africa, where it grows in forest understorey, secondary bush, and moist disturbed ground. It arises from a thick, fleshy, horizontal underground rhizome or tuber and produces a single enormous, much-divided leaf borne on a tall, stout petiole that may reach 1–2 m or more; the petiole is conspicuously armed with short, sharp prickles and is mottled green and pale. The leaf blade is deeply three-parted and further pinnately dissected into many segments, giving a fern-like canopy. The inflorescence is a typical aroid structure, with a fleshy spadix bearing tiny flowers, partly enclosed by a hooded, often purplish to greenish spathe, and is followed by a head of fleshy berries. As in many aroids the raw tissues contain calcium oxalate raphides and are acrid and irritant until processed. It favors humid, shaded, fertile soils in lowland tropical Africa.
