Traditional Uses

In Ghana and other parts of West Africa, traditional healers use the stem bark and leaves of Aidia genipiflora to treat microbial infections and inflammatory conditions including gout, oedema and boils (Mensah et al., 2022). Experimental work on the stem bark extract has supported the anti-inflammatory activity underlying these uses. These applications are recorded as African folk medicine.

Botanical Description

Aidia genipiflora is a shrub or small to medium tree of the coffee family, distributed in the wild forests of tropical West and Central Africa, including Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Cameroon and Sudan. It has opposite, simple, glossy leaves with entire margins and interpetiolar stipules characteristic of the Rubiaceae. The fragrant flowers are white to cream and tubular, borne in axillary clusters, and are followed by small, fleshy, berry-like fruits that ripen dark. The species grows in moist lowland and gallery forest. Its stem bark is grey and somewhat fissured. The plant is valued locally both as forest timber and as a source of herbal medicine, and its bark and leaves contain bioactive constituents that have attracted pharmacological study.
