Botanical Description
Achillea odorata, the cream-flowered sneezewort or scented yarrow, is a small aromatic perennial herb in the Asteraceae native to dry, calcareous grasslands, garrigue, and rocky slopes of the western Mediterranean basin, including Spain, southern France, Italy, and North Africa. Plants form low, leafy, mat-like clumps from short, branching rhizomes and reach only 10 to 30 cm tall in flower, well below typical Achillea millefolium. The alternate leaves are oblong-lanceolate in outline, 2 to 5 cm long, twice to three times pinnatifid into very narrow, almost filiform ultimate segments crowded along the rachis, finely greyish-pubescent, and emitting a strong sweet, somewhat camphoraceous aroma when crushed. The flat-topped to slightly domed corymb is composed of 15 to 50 small composite heads, each 4 to 6 mm across, with 5 to 8 short, broad, creamy white to pale yellowish ray florets and yellow disc florets. Achenes are small, glabrous, oblong, and lack a pappus.

Bicyclic monoterpene ketoneConcentration: 23-45% of essential oil
The dominant volatile of Achillea odorata essential oil (reported at 22.9-26.3% in Algerian material and up to 45.0% in Moroccan subsp. pectinata). Camphor contributes the penetrating, camphoraceous odour and has counter-irritant, mild antimicrobial and rubefacient properties, but is neurotoxic and potentially proconvulsant in high internal doses.
Bornyl acetate
Monoterpene esterConcentration: up to ~15% of essential oil
A woody, pine-like ester reported as a major constituent (approx. 15%) of subsp. pectinata oil. Associated with anti-inflammatory and mild sedative/expectorant activity in essential-oil pharmacology.
Borneol
Bicyclic monoterpene alcoholConcentration: up to ~11% of essential oil
Reported around 11% in subsp. pectinata. Borneol has documented anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antimicrobial actions and is a traditional penetration enhancer.
1,8-Cineole (eucalyptol)
Monoterpene oxideConcentration: 3-18% of essential oil
Variable across provenance (about 3% Moroccan, 15.7-17.8% Algerian). A well-studied expectorant and anti-inflammatory monoterpene oxide with antimicrobial activity.
alpha-Pinene
Bicyclic monoterpene hydrocarbonConcentration: 11-12% in Algerian oil
A major hydrocarbon of the Algerian oil (11.3-12.5%). Contributes bronchodilatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant activity and the fresh, resinous top-note.
beta-Eudesmol
Sesquiterpene alcoholConcentration: ~4.7% of essential oil
A minor oxygenated sesquiterpene (about 4.7%) reported for subsp. pectinata; eudesmol-type alcohols show anticholinergic and neuroprotective actions in pharmacological studies.
Camphene
Bicyclic monoterpene hydrocarbonConcentration: ~3.6% of essential oil
A minor monoterpene contributing to the camphoraceous profile, with reported antioxidant and lipid-lowering activity in the wider literature.
⚠ Drug Interactions
Antiepileptic / anticonvulsant medicines
The oil is camphor-dominant (up to ~45%). Camphor is a recognised proconvulsant/CNS stimulant at toxic doses and could theoretically lower seizure threshold or oppose anticonvulsant control if the concentrated essential oil is ingested.
Clinical note: People with epilepsy and those on anticonvulsants should avoid ingesting the concentrated essential oil; culinary/infusion amounts of the herb are not implicated.
Preparation Methods
Aromatic infusion / tisane
Parts: Flowering tops, Leaves
Traditionally the dried flowering aerial parts are infused (approx. 1-2 g per cup of just-boiled water, steeped 10 minutes) as a digestive and mildly antiseptic bitter aromatic in western-Mediterranean folk practice.
Essential oil (steam/hydrodistillation)
Parts: Flowering aerial parts
Hydrodistillation yields a camphor-rich essential oil investigated as a food antimicrobial and preservative. Because of high camphor content it should be used highly diluted and topically only; internal use of the neat oil is discouraged, and it should be avoided in pregnancy, in infants, and by people with epilepsy.
Clinical Studies
GC-MS Analysis, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities of Achillea odorata subsp. pectinata and Ruta montana Essential Oils and Their Potential Use as Food Preservatives
GC-MS identified camphor (45.0%), bornyl acetate (15.1%) and borneol (11.3%) as principal constituents. The oil showed DPPH radical-scavenging (IC50 189.8 ug/mL) and strong inhibition zones against Bacillus subtilis (31 mm), Proteus mirabilis (30 mm) and Candida albicans (25 mm), supporting potential as a natural food preservative.
