Botanical Description
Achillea nobilis, the noble yarrow, is a perennial herb in the family Asteraceae, native to dry meadows, steppe, rocky slopes and roadsides across central and southern Europe to the Caucasus and western Siberia. From a short rhizome it produces erect, somewhat downy stems 20-60 cm tall, clothed in finely two- to three-pinnate, grey-green aromatic leaves that are shorter and more compactly cut than those of common yarrow. In summer it bears dense, flat-topped corymbs 4-7 cm across made up of many small capitula, each with five short creamy-white ray florets surrounding a yellowish disc, the whole inflorescence releasing a strong herbaceous scent when bruised. The achenes are small, ribbed and lack a pappus. It is sometimes grown in rock gardens and dry borders, and locally is grazed by livestock.
Active Constituents
α-Thujone
Monoterpene ketoneConcentration: 25.7–34.1% of the essential oil
The dominant volatile in most reported Achillea nobilis oils. α-Thujone contributes to the plant's aromatic, bitter character and antimicrobial and anthelmintic actions, but it is a GABA-A receptor antagonist and neurotoxin/convulsant at higher doses, which is the principal safety concern limiting internal use of the essential oil.

An expectorant and mucolytic monoterpene with documented anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity; contributes to the camphoraceous odour and to the herb's traditional use for respiratory and abdominal complaints.
Artemisia ketone
Irregular monoterpene ketoneConcentration: up to ~14.8% of the essential oil
A characteristic ketone of many Artemisia and Achillea oils, contributing to aroma and to reported antioxidant/antimicrobial properties of the volatile fraction.
Camphor / Borneol
Bicyclic monoterpene ketone / alcoholConcentration: camphor ~8%, borneol ~10% of the oil
Rubefacient and mildly antiseptic terpenoids that underpin topical use of yarrow oils for aches and skin conditions; camphor is toxic if ingested in quantity.
Fragranol / fragranyl acetate
Irregular monoterpene alcohol / esterConcentration: fragranyl acetate reported up to ~32% in some chemotypes
Chemotype-defining constituents; their high proportion in certain populations illustrates the strong intraspecific variability of A. nobilis oil composition.
Flavone glycosides (apigenin-7-glucoside, luteolin-7-glucoside, vitexin, orientin, isoorientin, swertisin)
Flavonoid C- and O-glycosidesConcentration: Major polar constituents of aerial-part extracts
These flavones and their glycosides account for much of the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and acetylcholinesterase-inhibitory activity reported for the aqueous and ethanolic extracts.

Impart the bitter tonic and antiparasitic character typical of the genus; sesquiterpene lactones are also the class most often responsible for allergic contact dermatitis from Asteraceae.
Preparation Methods
Infusion (herbal tea) of dried flowering tops
Parts: flowering aerial parts, flower heads
Traditionally, roughly 1–2 g of dried flowering tops is steeped in a cup of hot water for 5–10 minutes and taken for digestive complaints, flatulence, abdominal pain or as an emmenagogue in the folk medicine of Anatolia and the Balkans. Because the essential oil is rich in α-thujone (a neurotoxic GABA-A antagonist), prolonged or high-dose internal use is discouraged and the herb should be avoided in pregnancy and lactation.
External wash / poultice
Parts: flowering aerial parts
A stronger decoction or the crushed fresh herb is applied topically to wounds, rashes, psoriasis and haemorrhoids in Balkan and Iranian folk practice. Patch-test first: the sesquiterpene lactones can provoke allergic contact dermatitis in Asteraceae-sensitive individuals.
Essential oil (aromatic/topical only)
Parts: flowering aerial parts (steam-distilled)
The steam-distilled oil is used externally in dilution. Owing to high thujone and camphor content it is not recommended for internal consumption; ingestion risks neurotoxicity and seizures.
