Description

Wu Ye Lu Gen Tang (Reed Decoction with Five Leaves), from Writings on Damp-Heat Pathogen Diseases (1852).

Associated formula of Qing Luo Yin.

Actions: Disseminates upper burner yang qi; Scours out summerheat with light, clearing, aromatic, and bland herbs

Indications: Mild damp-heat: fever, sweating, slight stifling sensation in the chest and upper abdomen, hunger without desire to eat, bland taste, slight thirst without desire to drink, soft stools, hot urine, thin, sticky mixed white and yellow tongue coating, pulse soggy on the right and slightly rapid on the left.

Pattern: Damp-heat obstructing the clear yang in the upper burner

Usage: For mild damp-heat in the upper burner where dampness is more marked than in the main formula; drains dampness downward via Benincasae Semen and Phragmitis Rhizoma.

Commentary: Follows Ye Tian-Shi's principle of dispelling dampness from below the heat while using light herbs to open upper-burner yang.
