Description

Tiao Wei Cheng Qi Tang (Regulate the Stomach and Order the Qi Decoction), from the Shang Han Lun, is used to promote bowel movement and purge clumped heat steadily and moderately.

Presentation: constipation (less severe than Da Cheng Qi Tang); abdominal fullness; poor appetite; thirst; fever; irritation; accumulation with weakened Stomach; constipation with weak Stomach-Qi after repeated vigorous purgatives; tongue: sticky, yellow coating; pulse: slippery and rapid.

Syndrome: Accumulation syndrome due to excess heat in the intestine.

Composition strategy:

  • Da Huang and Mang Xiao in large doses but Da Huang is cooked with the other herbs.
  • Zhi Gan Cao replaces Zhi Shi and Hou Po because Qi obstruction is milder but the Stomach is weak.

Energetics dose-weighted

The formula's overall nature, taste balance and channel reach, weighted by each herb's dose. Classical formulas often pair warm and cool herbs on purpose, so a net figure summarises the mix — it doesn't describe every herb in it.

Each entry reads as the larger formula written out: “+” adds its other catalogue cores, then the herbs none of them hold. A catalogue formula counts as a core only when at least 80% of its herbs are present, no more than 1 is absent, and the absent herb is not its chief.
