Description

Si Miao Yong An Tang (Four-Valiant Decoction for Well-Being), from the Yan Fang Xin Bian (New Compilation of Time-Tested Formulas) by Bao Xiang-Ao.

Actions: Clears heat and eliminates toxins; Activates blood circulation and relieves pain.

Presentation: Gangrene: gangrene of the extremities with purulent abscess, dark red discoloration, local inflammation and swelling, a burning sensation, sometimes severe pain, possible fever, thirst, a red tongue body, and a rapid pulse.

Cautions:

  • Source: avoid scratching the affected area while taking it
  • For heat-toxin gangrene only; inappropriate for cold-type gangrene
  • Insufficient alone when tissue necrosis is confirmed; surgery or amputation may be needed

Pharmacological effects reported:

  • Analgesic: marked analgesia in mice starting 40 minutes after oral dosing
  • Coagulation: no effect on coagulation or bleeding time in rabbits and mice
