Description
Bie Jia Jian Wan (Soft-Shelled Turtle Shell Pill), from the Jin Gui Yao Lue (Essentials from the Golden Cabinet) by Zhang Zhong-Jing.
Actions: Activates qi and blood circulation; Dispels dampness and dissolves phlegm; Softens hardness and resolves masses.
Presentation: Malaria with splenomegaly: chronic malaria with enlarged spleen, hypochondriac distention, immobile masses in the hypochondrium, abdominal pain, muscle wasting, decreased food intake, alternation of fever and chills, and amenorrhea.
Cautions:
- Contains many strong qi/blood-moving, damp-dispelling and phlegm-dissolving herbs; use with caution in zheng qi deficiency

Preparation
Source text: mix 3kg burnt ash with 10kg grain-based liquor, filter out the ash, cook Bie Jia in the liquid to a thick paste; powder the other 22 herbs and combine with the paste and Feng Mi (honey) into small pills. Take 3g three times daily. The ash and liquor help Bie Jia move blood and soften masses.
